Book Club

How a group of women (and some cake) saved me from my book slump.

So last year I realised that I had gotten stuck in a complete reading rut, which had me reading the same story again and again, leading me to pick up the remote control instead of a book. I am the kind of person who waits at home for someone else to decided where to go or doesn’t want to go out in the first place but cry’s into my tea when nobody invites me! I also get really nervous about sharing my opinion in case people judge me. In the past both of these issue have prevented me from plenty but the difference this time was that I was pregnant, so a) watching the TV was making me feel nauseous – as was everything else- and b) I decided I needed to be able to get involved in preparation for all the mother and baby groups out there as I was not having my child afraid to be a part of anything! When my friend posted a picture to Facebook about her book club I decided to take control and ask her if I could join.

So I went along to the first group and I didn’t really share anything as I was still nervous and I only knew one woman there (my friend who posted to Facebook) but I did enjoy it. I returned the next month, ready to voice my opinion and people listened, accepted what I had to say and shared their opinion. No one pointed and laughed, no one said I was stupid for thinking the way I did, no one judged me for not liking a book that the majority loved! There is never any pressure to read the book and we all get a choice every month as one person selects three options for us all to look at and then we vote on which we would like to read the following month. After the discussion and voting has happened we then get to eat home made cake and catch up! There is no group in December as it falls right around Christmas time but that is made up for in January when we have a quiz and buffet!

Book club is now one of my most cherished outings, I go every month (I have only missed one in July 2018 due to the birth of my Son!) and have made some wonderful friends that share my love of reading!

*Thanks to the George & Dragon in Holmes Chapel who reserve us a table every month and let us be really cheeky and eat our own cake!

Here is a list of the 2018/19 books we picked so far and from now on I will be doing a post each month on our choice, my thoughts on it, the groups thoughts and the options that were not picked.

The first in the list is the book that was selected to read that month by the group and if I have read it anyway I have put a hyperlink to my goodreads review.
